Your wedding is one of the most important, special days of your life. It is the official start to the new life you are building together with another person. Your photos are one of the most important purchases you will make for the big day—they immortalize the event and you can look back on the photos fondly for the rest of your life. Choosing the right wedding photographer is paramount and here are some helpful tips to pick the one most suitable for your event. Style Photography is an art; you can create all sorts of moods, emotions and environments though a picture. Photographers all have unique styles and style is subjective. The work of one may be very appealing to some and unappealing to others. When looking over portfolios, how do you feel about the pictures? Could you picture yourself and your fiancée in these same photos, or does the thought make you cringe? When viewing samples, make sure you are seeing the work of at least one entire wedding, not just the photographer’s favorite shots. Any photographer who markets online, whether a full-on website or a blog, will definitely have some samples to view online—this can be a good place to start narrowing down the choices. Another important consideration is the time element; someone who focuses on capturing natural moments, with a short stint of posed photos, will require less of your time than someone who focuses on more elaborate posed shots. If you like a particular photographer’s style, ask how long it takes to produce these pictures. Personality Your wedding photographer is an important part of your day, and you want someone who fits into the atmosphere of the event. How you feel about the person personally is very important—do you like her, do you feel that you would want to spend time with her on the big day? If the person seems really overbearing, you may come to regret your choice if everyone ends up feeling ill at ease in his presence. But, at the same time, you want to feel that this person can take charge when necessary; I remember at my sister’s wedding, the groomsmen were acting like children and making everything more difficult. While very friendly, the husband and wife photography team knew how to get things done. Experience Experience is an important consideration. Photographers who have been around the wedding block a few times will know where to stand to get those perfect shots or to handle the snafus that may arise during the big day. Moving along with the events of the wedding day are second-nature to them. With that being said, however, everyone has to start somewhere and at one point, this seasoned photographer was shooting his first wedding. If you do decide to go with someone with less experience, clearly outline expectations and make sure the photographer can meet them. Provide a list of specific shots you want that day and give it to him well in advance.
